Critical Care Unit - Hoag Hospital

Newport Beach, CA

The local coastal bluff scenery was the design team’s inspiration for this 16,812 SF Critical Care Unit. The project converted an existing 33-bed nursing unit into two 10-bed critical care units. The Units were designed with sensitivity to patient’s loved ones, medical staff and the site’s natural healing environment. Each Unit is designed with one centralized and multiple satellite nurse stations. The two centralized stations provide for overall monitoring, staffing and clinical functions.  The satellite stations outside the patient modules provide electronic patient charting and enhanced personalized patient care. To improve staff efficiencies, the Units are connected along a common interior corridor which allows the Units to share resources such as the Blood Gas Lab and a Pharmacy mixing room. The space incorporates a large staff lounge area, family consultation room, a conference room and three offices.
